“Thou hast trodden down all them that err from thy statutes: for their deceit is falsehood.” Psalms 119:118
The psalmist is taking note of how God has dealt with those who have not followed after God’s Word, and he says that God has trodden them down.
If you don’t follow after what God has laid down in His Word and you purposefully continue to ignore It, it does not matter how many ministries you are involved in, how many people you counsel or doors you knock on—God will not honor it and He will deal with you.
We can either willingly submit to Him in humility or we will be trodden down.
I suppose there are two ways we can be found at God’s feet:
1. Humbly beseeching Him as we bow at His feet with a contrite heart, begging Him to teach us through His Word.
2. Pressed under under His foot as He trods down our proud, deceitful spirit.
Many of us have stood at our place in a pew while “Just As I Am” is sung during an invitation. We have all had these little talks with ourselves and argue in our minds that it would show weakness to step out of our place and go kneel at an altar and pray. We believe because we have been saved for so many years and serving the Lord that others will think of us differently if we appear “too” humble.
This is sad.
God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble which are clothed in humility according to I Peter 5:5. And todays verse proves what God does to those who refuse to follow His Word!
Don’t ever get so wrapped up in your own Christianity that you think you are not in need of some repentance time each day in your spiritual life. When we forget to humble ourselves we have taken the first step AWAY from God in our pride. And God will begin to resist us. And, if we stay in that pride, we may end up setting aside God’s Word so much that we will fall.
“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18
“A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.” Proverbs 29:23
Do we really want to be trodden down by God?
Do we really want to be teaching and pretending that we are speaking Truth, when all we are doing inwardly is ignoring God’s Word?
I don’t. I want His touch in my life. I want His presence in my life. I want to be found at His feet, not under His feet.
Sometimes we just need to do some inventory in our hearts. We need to make sure that we are reading the Bible with OURSELVES in mind, not just the unsaved or backslidden, or that so and so down the row. Maybe God is talking to US and wanting US to get things right with Him so He can fellowship with us once more and hear our prayers.
Sadly, all too often we will straighten our backs, steel ourselves against the conviction of the Holy Spirit and wait out another altar call so that we may appear “strong”. And our walk with God will continue to suffer. We will no longer walk at His side, but we will be walked over. We need to humble ourselves. I need to humble myself.
Dwell in His Word today and allow it to point out anything that can be standing between you and the Saviour.
Until Next Time, Lord willing,
