Day 99

“Remove from me reproach and contempt; for I have kept thy testimonies.”  Psalms 119:22

Everything you and I do comes down to what we think.  Every last bit of deciding to sin or not to sin; it is all decided by our thought process.  We either lay hold of wisdom and obey because we understand the consequences of the works of the flesh and the reward of walking in the Sprit or we refuse to think of it and make a conscious decision to disobey.

It is so disheartning when I bow my head to God and confess wrongdoing, even though I know He has promised to forgive me.  I get aggravated with how I choose to sin instead of obey.  I don’t want Jesus to return yet because millions would go to hell, but I desire Him to return because I want to be rid of my flesh and the battle against it day in and day out.

Sometimes, even when we have chosen to do RIGHT, and we have a victory in our spiritual lives, people will accuse of doing wrong.  Just like the psalmist is saying in today’s verse.  People have scorned him and talked about him and he is wanting God to remove their wagging tongues and gossip.  He reminds God that he has been obedient and that he has done what was right.

Have you ever been in a similar situation?  I think we all have.  But don’t let your mind go there now and start dragging up those moments.  Rather, let’s you and I decide to THINK about Jesus.  We are supposed to be dwelling in Him, right?  Well, let’s look and see what happened to Him when people scorned Him.

“And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. And sitting down they watched him there; And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left. And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest itin three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth. Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This mancalleth for Elias. And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled itwith vinegar, and put iton a reed, and gave him to drink. The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him. Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.”  Matthew 27:35-50

Did you read that?  Jesus was scorned and mocked all the way to His death!   And Jesus NEVER chose to sin.  He kept right on doing what was right and what was God’s will for Him to do.  Boy, that just encourages the fire out of me!

Don’t let the devil trick you into thinking that if people are scorning you, then God must not be helping you!  Their scorn and their mocking you and your decisions to follow Christ should NEVER be a reason for you to lay the Sword down and quit!

Jesus understands what you are going through.  He knows EXACTLY how weak you feel and how helpless you get when another piece of false testimony arises against you!  He is praying for you that when you are done being sifted that you will still THINK right and lay hold on wisdom and Truth.

And what is wisdom?

“But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:”  1 Corinthians 1:30

And what is Truth?

“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”  John 17:17

I really want to remind us on this Monday morning to purpose in our hearts to THINK correctly.  It is easy to throw up your hands and quit.  It is easy to stop thinking about what God’s testimonies instruct us to do!  Anyone can do that!

But it will take an effort and a desire for communion with God that will get you to line your thoughts up with God’s Word.  You have to do more than sing, “I have decided to follow Jesus”, you have to put action to those thoughts!

The end result of each of those choices is vastly different!

  • Quitting can mean the loss of reward, unrest, and a blight on the Light we are to be shining for Christ.  Quitting can ultimately lead to the expansion of hell itself as it will have to enlarge it’s interior because the souls YOU were suppose to bring to God will die and remain lost forever in a place that WAS NOT made for them, all because you decided to quit thinking and you didn’t believe that Jesus could help you do what HE Himself did as a man here on earth.
  • Choosing to think correctly can mean an expansion of God’s family as you rightly conduct yourself based on the principles you follow in God’s Word.  You will find yourself so humbled by the scorn of man that you will ask God to roll the weight away from you, but by doing so, you will get the privilege of experiencing His sufficient grace and a peace that passes all understanding.  It will fortify your faith which will lead you to grab hold of the Bible and charge forward completely covered in the spiritual armor you need to face another day and another trial.

Sure, it’s okay to have the desire for God to shut people’s mouths and stop their wagging tongues, and maybe He will..He is in the Heavens and will do what He pleases (Psalm 115:3) but if He is working something for your good (Romans 8:28) then by all means, just trust Him to know what He is doing and in His ability to help you bear it!

Tomorrow is full of choices, full of unthought thoughts; how will you go about them?

Will you choose to bathe yourself in the Word and keep God’s testimonies no matter what insult is hurled your way?  Or will you give up and waste your moments?

Encourage yourself in the Word today.  Pray for God to remove those who are wanting to take you down, but until He does, keep waging the battle!  Keep giving your mind to Him to fill with His goodness, His grace and His glory!

You can do it.  You can make it.  Jesus knows and He wants you to keep on keeping on.

Until Next Time, Lord willing,

The mind is a powerful tool which Satan uses to divert the Christian but also to keep the unsaved from choosing Jesus. If we could see Jesus looking at us, we would do rightly? We even choose to not “see” Him because we choose everything else but His Word. We should stay in His Word every morning until we feel His breath upon our face.

  2. Thank you for this reminder! I have never read any of your devotions before, until today. My wife, Kelly, often references your words and is encouraged by your writings. Today she forwarded your post to me and thought it might encourage me as well. She was right. Sometimes the fight gets tough and the devil whispers in your ear, “why are you playing by the rules and doing right, no one else is.” I’m thankful for the reminder this morning to stay the course, do right, and not throw in the towel.
