All the way my Savior leads me,
What have I to ask beside?
Can I doubt His tender mercy,
Who through life has been my Guide?
Heav’nly peace, divinest comfort,
Here by faith in Him to dwell!
For I know, whate’er befall me,
Jesus doeth all things well;
For I know, whate’er befall me,
Jesus doeth all things well.
F. Crosby – “All the Way My Savior Leads Me”
How often we sing this song while standing behind a pew or chair in church. We may be holding a big hymnal or reading from a screen hanging from the front wall of the sanctuary but our voices chorus together to proclaim that we KNOW Jesus doeth all things well.
But what about when what “befalls” us is unpleasant?
What about my friend who just lost her husband?
What about my friend who just had her sons removed from her home?
What about my friend who is a shut in?
What about my friend who has breast cancer?
What about….fill in the blank.
The writer of this song was blind, so when she penned the words: “Here by faith in Him to dwell” I think she knew what that meant. She had learned an aspect of 2 Corinthians 5:7 that we may never understand.
“(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)” 2 Corinthians 5:7
She knew this verse meant her body was a temporal dwelling and Heaven was where she was going, but she also knew that being blind in her earthly body caused her to truly be led by faith.
I am glad she wrote this song in a moment she was undoubtedly trying to lean on God and remind herself that Jesus really does all things well.
I am also glad God nudged me with it early in the morning so it became my song for the day.
Your situation in life certainly differs from mine. We all walk different paths and we all are in different phases. But we ALL can rely on God being there and walking us through our particular life’s path no matter who we are if we are saved.
How do I know this?
Because once we are saved, we are definitely secure in the knowledge of the fact that we are His and He isn’t letting us go here or in eternity:
“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,” Ephesians 1:13
“Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.” 2 Corinthians 1:21-22
Why would Jesus not do things perfectly and well for those who are in Him and eternally bound to Him? He wouldn’t want to undo HIS OWN WORK in us!
“But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.” 1 Peter 5:10
The word perfect here means to mend or restore, think of a fishing net. I have watched many men and women in our village mend their nets in order to use them again. And Jesus knows we are flawed human beings and we need to be “shored”up in spots that only can be fixed through suffering because when we suffer, we see His strength.
“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
If Jesus is perfect, why should He do anything less than love us perfectly, restore us perfectly and settle us perfectly?
When the devil comes screaming at you in the late night hours as your body wants to sleep but your mind keeps worrying, tell him you are not playing along. Remind Him Jesus is doing all things well in your life.
Keep going. Cry if you must, but don’t quit. You are being mended by the master and He knows what He is doing and He is doing it well.
Trust in God’s Word and let it dwell in your thoughts when anything contrary threatens your peace of mind and you will be able to sing:
“For I know, whate’er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well”
And may I add, if you are not saved and you want to know God on this kind of personal level, I can take His Word and show you where HE said He loves you, died for you and wants you to put your faith in Him.
